Destination Weddings in Vienne

Imagine your lives as a married couple beginning in a town that was founded in the year 47 BC by Julius Caesar !    From 259 to 269 AD, Vienna was the capital of Provincia Viennensis, one of the two independent Gallic domains.  Roman rule in the area ended in 275 AD.

The many Roman monuments to Vienne’s historical past include a theatre, built on the slopes of nearby Mount Pipet it could seat more than 13000 – it is still used, an aqueduct and the Forum’s portico.   Other unique architectural marvels include the pyramid, surmounted upon the arch at the site of the circus where races were held, and the Roman Temple of Augustus and Livia that dates from the early 1st century AD. 

Wedding ceremonies could take place in one of the many beautiful churches in Vienne.  The former Abbey Church of Saint-Pierre, which contains a lapidary museum with Roman relics, dates from the 4th century and is one of the oldest churches in France.  The church of Saint-André-le-Bas, near the Rhône Bridge, has a fine spire and cloisters dating from the 12th century.  The Cathedral of Saint-Maurice, which also dates from the 12th century, and which was finally finished in the 16th century, has a fine late Gothic portal.  Its nave contains interesting sculptures and tomb slabs.
