This is a Frankish town built on the hills of the Rhine Valley and the banks of the River Lauch. At its center stood a tower with dovecote that was said to have given the city a name; Villa Columbaria which means Dove in French and then eventually became Colmar.
Within the historical heart are beautifully preserved buildings and churches. The town hall is an 18th century building with pink sandstone tiles that once belonged to the abbey de Paris. The Protestant Eglise St Matthieu, a former Franciscan church is decorated with fine 14th and 15th century stained glass windows. The most remarkable one of them is known as “vitrall de la Crucifixion” and is believed to be by Pierre d’Andlau.
One of the main attractions of Colmar is Petit Venice. It starts from the tanner’s district to Point St Pierre. This is a lovely area along the River Lauch; here you can enjoy a romantic stroll along the banks or a relaxing boat ride.
