There is a legend about Molsheim; according to some historians the name of Molsheim comes from the Latin word meaning mill.  The mill that is located nearby Avolsheim in the north may have been at the origin of the name.  And others believe it came from the Ligurian vocabulary but Mollesheim was not mentioned until 820 where it could have originated from Celtic or Roman roots.

The great period of Molsheim was during the 16th – 17th centuries where the town welcomed a large part of the institutions that were created around religious struggles and for spiritual directions.
