The edifice owes a lot of its charm to the pink sandstone from the Vosges from which it was built. The architects of the cathedral were later influenced by Gothic art newly introduced in the region. The abbey was completed in 1284 but the 142m spire was not placed until 1439. On a nice bright day the stained glass windows shine like jewels, especially the rose window over the western portal.
