Visiting Cabourg today you would never imagine that in the beginning of the 19th century the town was described as one of the poorest communities in the region. In 1854, when only 300 souls called Cabourg home, two investors, Henri Durand-Morimbeau and Archille Collin, successfully transformed this tiny fishing village into a fashionable seaside resort.
In Cabourg, it seems that all roads lead to the Grand Hotel, its adjoining casino and the long boardwalk that link these buildings to the sea. This was the idea of Paul Leroux, the architect that designed the resort. Whether strolling down the avenues or along the beach you can easily imagine yourself in Cabourg of the 19th century.
Marcel Proust, the French author, made Cabourg and especially the Grand Hotel famous in his book ‘A l’ombre des Jeunes Filles en Fleurs’ in which he described life in this seaside resort during the ‘Belle Époque’ the end of the 19th century. You may chose to stay in the room thought to be Proust’s favorite!
