The Cathedral, built between 1180 and 1480, is an exemplary vision of both Gothic and Romanesque religious architecture. With a total interior length of 80 meters and a height of 32 meters, the edifice is truly awe-inspiring. There are lovely stained glass windows throughout and an astronomical clock dating from the 15th century. |
| Exterior |
Arches, columns, towers and statues create a beautiful ensemble of architectural details for the visitor. On one side of the Cathedral is an archaeological garden presenting objects of historical interest found during excavations conducted on site. At night the Cathedral is spectacularly lit and incredibly romantic. |

Year Round. |
Since its very first wall was constructed in the year 1165, the Cathedral St. Jean has been the most important monument in the city of Lyon. At times flamboyantly gothic, at others classically Romanesque, the Cathedral was chosen as the wedding location by Henri IV and Marie de Médicis in 1600. It has survived vandalism during the French Revolution and damage suffered during the Liberation of Lyon at the end of World War II.
Today it is a tremendous source of pride for the citizens of Lyon and a major tourist attraction.
